Middle level of ICT Integration
Middle Level ICT Integration
Today we were oriented on using PhET simulation. It originally stood for "Physics Education Technology ", is a project at the University of Colorado that creates free, interactive simulations of science, social studies, and math concepts that is beneficial for the students in better learning. It is because I feel that it will engage the students as it engaged me. On top of that it is easy to use and every student can get access to it. PhET simulation can give a virtual experience where students can feel as if they are doing it manually. For example; designing a circuit.
There are numerous benefit of using PhET simulation.
- Enhanced engagement and learning - it makes learning more interactive and engaging by fostering a deeper understanding of scientific and mathematical concept. For example, in designing a circuit students are actively engaged by connecting cells with wires in order to light the bulb.
- Improve conceptual understanding- it helps learner to develop deeper understanding of the concepts as they can see how theses concepts are related and apply in the real world. For example, by using the PhET simulation in a circuit construction, they know when does the bulb glow and how Voltage and Current are related as when they record which can be also applied in our life.
- Promotes scientific inquiry- Since PhET simulation is like an experiment, it encourage students to ask questions, experiment, and draw conclusions which help them to develop critically thinking and problem solving skills.
- Accessible and free - PhET simulations are free and can be accessed to everyone from any devices as long as one has internet connection.
Middle level of ICT integration refer to the use of Technology to enhance specific learning objectives within a subject area. ICT is not the sole focus of instruction but is an essential tool used to enhance and deepen students understanding. It can be also referred to as lesson plan as all the components of lesson plan are included in the Middle level of ICT integration.
Lesson plan
Subject: Science
Topic ; what is an element made of ?
Class; V
Time; 45 minutes
Teaching learning Materials; PPT on What is an element made of?, Phet simulation on build a molecule
Previous knowledge : know what is an element.
Lesson objectives
At the end of the lesson, each student will be able to;
Define what is atom correctly in their own words after the discussion in the class
Use Phet simulation to build molecules by combining two or more atoms on their own without teachers help
explain at least two examples of molecules that are useful in our day to day life.
Lesson introduction (5min)
Greetings
Recollect the previous knowledge by asking following questions
What is an element?
Give five examples of an element .
Lesson development (35)
Explain the concept of element, atom, and molecules using PPT (10)
Activity 1 (individual activity)
Instructions ; each student will go to the link provided and build different molecules on their own. For this I will give 10 minutes so that students can practice and understand in depth how molecules are formed.

For example:
Activity 2 ( Pair work)
Instructions; students will choose their pair and list the examples of molecules that they found in the PhEt simulation. The pair will select two molecules and explain their usefulness in our lives. For example let's say the molecule is Oxygen, O2 is a gas, we cannot live without it. The air we breathe contains oxygen. For this I will give 5 minutes.
Follow up activities(10min)
After 5 minutes, a student from each pair will share their work to the class.
Lesson closure (10mins)
activity - let the students write an acknowledgement letter to the atoms and molecules for they are very useful to us in about a paragraph.
Let one student share it to the class
Reiterate the important points .
