Situating tool

  •  concept of situating tool
  • reflection or writeup for the situating tool
Today we were introduced to ICT as a situating tool. Situating tool provide students to conceptualize the ideas of the real world by integrating the theories in the practical application of real- world situations. E.g. google earth and GeoGebra

Systems and applications that place a user in an environment where they can "experience" the context and event are known as situating tools. Virtual reality (VR), 3D computer-simulated pictures, experiential learning environments, and simulation-based educational games are examples of situating tools. Through the actual application of theories in real-life scenarios, situating tools help students grasp notions of the real world, such as GeoGebra and Google earth.
There are numerous situating tools, out of many we looked into Google earth which help us to locate places and visit them. It can be very useful to use in social studies and geography classes.

Then we played a simulation game for 15 minutes which was very interesting as I can't even play for more than 1 minute. Then we looked into Geogebra which can be useful tool for mathematics classes. We even used it to construct graphs and shapes.

The steps in making equilateral triangle are:

1. Go to Geogebra.org

2. login with your email .com

3. Then click on the calculator menu

4. Draw two points A and B using the new point tool

5. Draw the line segment AB using the segment between two points

6. From A draw a circle through B using the circle with centre through point tool and vice versa

7. Then with line draw a line on intersection point.

8. Then using move, click show hide and remove the outer circles.

9. Finally go to download or save.

Construction of square, if you want to explore

Draw the line AB

• Perpendicular line

• Centre of point B to A

Intersection Point

• Bring or drag the perpendicular line

Centre of point A to B

After learning about ICT as a situating tool, I came to the understanding that there will be great affect in the teaching and learning as students get opportunities  to solve problem, play games and even visit places virtually as if they are there performing it manually. It will not only make student feel but also improve their retention as they can see, and feel. Situating tool like Geogebra can be a useful in mathematics classes which is considered as one of the toughest subject by the students and this use may change the students perspective and enhance their interest in math. Even we are not access to high tech we can even use simulation as a situating tool in teaching and learning.
